I'm an American author living in Amsterdam. My last novel, The Book of Samuel, was published by St. Martin's Press in 2009 and translated into Italian and nominated for the prestigious Printz award. I received an M.A. in Creative Writing from the City College of New York and my short stories and essays have been published in, among others, The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, De Volkskrant, Guernica, and Chelsea among others.

At Earlham College, I spent my junior year abroad in Northern Ireland, where I was a reporter for The Newsletter and Belfast Telegraph, covering the bombings, shootings, and assassinations that marked the end of The Troubles. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Armenia and later, a certified New York public school working with lower-income students in the upper-Manhattan/Bronx area. I became a dual Dutch and American citizen in 2013. I currently teach writing at The University of Amsterdam. You can read an article about my novel writing class here (in Dutch).
